It allows you get the details of the http transaction with the web server. Some of it overlaps the functionality of firebug. The extension is fast and provides some nitty gritty details that are sorely necessary when debugging web applications.

It provides a detailed view of the headers, querystring, cookies, post data, and the content. It also provides the trace functionality, so you can see a detailed view of all the requests made to get the content on a page. The elevator evaluation is that it is a cool tool which will come in handy when you most need it.

Ubiquity is part graphical command line interface, part menu extension. Since it is an Firefox add-in it becomes a awesome part of the browser environment. The interface is mostly based on “verbs” that are generally related to a specific web application. Such as map, is part of google maps, and weather goes to weather underground.

Ubiquity Commands are very simple, if I want to find “Des Moines, IA” in google maps. I access the command line interface by clicking ctrl-space (from windows). Once the interface comes up and type: “map Des Moines, IA”.


Ubiquity could be a really useful tool, it is still in the new toy phase for me. I am enjoying just playing with it. I see many possibilities for customizing it with new verbs to create really useful and efficient workflows. Yet another reason to love Firefox.

Firebug, why don’t you have firebug. Ever try to debug javascript, css, or html stuff. Firebug is nice, it’s an add-on for Firefox. It allows you to debug almost every section of front end development. Get it, know it, love it.

Re-Sharper, the great add-on from Jet Brains that works awesome speeds up development, cool templating thing, and now with the key combinations of ctr-alt-shift-t, ctrl-alt-shift-windows-space-carrot-m, and ctrl-alt-fore-arm. But really it is addicting once you use it you probably won’t be able to develop in Visual Studio without. It is to auto complete what steroids are for Barry Bonds.

YSlow, it is an addendum to firebug from yahoo that gives you a grade on your pages optimization, helpful when diagnosing problems.

Firefox, I know cheesy to include a browser, but develop from Firefox, but it is the best browser to use in development, and it is always being updated. The next big tool will be for Firefox, because of the ease of the plug in architecture it just rocks.

Multiple IEs, not really a tool, but something that is important. It allows you to go back and check your compliance with different versions. We would like to believe our user’s are only going to be on IE 7, but that just isn’t true. The best part is YOU CAN INSTALL MULTIPLE IE’s ON WINDOWS XP.

Textpad, for text editing there are others maybe better and more free but I like it and it works, the right click to open is always handy.

Regex Workbench, if you do any amount of regular expression work this is a must have. Crafting, and testing regular expressions is a breeze with this.
